Sometimes we all need a weekend to escape the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. A short drive from Sydney and the Central coast lies the Hunter Valley – and if it isn’t on your bucket list already, it soon will be. The Hunter offers so much more than wine tours, with relaxing fresh air, open spaces and endless rolling hills, it’s a picturesque place to visit with enough activities to keep you entertained for days. We’ve outlined the best things to do and see while you’re exploring wine country so get your notepad and pen ready because you’re going to want to write these down.
First things first – accommodation! Harrigan’s Irish Pub and Accommodation is the perfect base for getting around the Hunter, whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, friends retreat or a family weekend away.
Once in the Hunter, what are you going to do with all this free time? Yes, of course, the wineries are a must see and if we’re being honest (which we are), a couple of our favourites are Tempus Two and Meerea Park, but what about activities to do with family or friends? Keep reading you won’t be disappointed.
The Hunter Valley Gardens offer 16 hectares (that’s 32 football fields) of themed Gardens, creating the perfect mix of fun, excitement and appreciation for blooming flowers and plants. This multi-award winning area has 10 internationally themed displays, including our Rose Garden, Indian Garden, Chinese Garden, Italian Grotto and many more. Once the sun goes down, that’s when the fun really begins! The Gardens turn into a glistening Christmas Lights Spectacular at night with over 2 million lights on display, perfect for families with little ones, date nights with that special someone or a group of friends. Need something else to grab your attention, our incredible rides will be sure to top off your night. We have four impressive amusement rides, all custom made in Italy and a permanent addition to the Gardens plus an inflatable Fun Zone.
If you’re looking for a more upbeat getaway, we’ve thought of that as well. Food, wine, concerts, bars and live music are on the cards when you visit and Roche Estate is your one-stop shop for all of it!
The Hunter Valley Smelly Cheese Shop will delight your taste buds with Australian and imported Artisan cheese, gourmet delights, homemade gelato, cured meats and accompaniments. Oishii has become a must dining experience for locals and visitors for its Japanese cuisine and fantastic authentic menu. Goldfish Bar & Kitchen has a wide selection of food as well as cocktails, Hunter Valley wines and craft beer, all the while relaxing on the terrace and overlooking the amazing manicured lawn and vines in front of you.
To top it all off, have you ever been to an open-air concert in the Hunter Valley? We can guarantee you it’s something you’ll cherish and rave about until you realise you need to book another ASAP and Google madly when the next Roche Estate concert is. Roche Estate is set amongst stunning vineyards with a large open stage, premium wines and food and the comfort of a relaxed open-air vibe while watching your favourite performer. With multiple concerts coming up this year, you’ll want to ensure you know what’s on!
So if you want a place to relax, explore, eat, be entertained or simply experience the vineyards, you know where to go.
See you soon!
